About Program
Prepare for a variety of careers in the foodservice industry such as entry level line cook, institutional foodservice operations, food service in the hotel industry, private and corporate catering operations, or foodservice for schools and community … all pathways leading to the position of executive chef. Instruction covers the technical skills of cooking from knife skills to production of all elements of the restaurant services, with a focus on solid culinary techniques as well as basic baking for the culinary professional. Food handling, food safety, and nutrition are fundamental to the program, which is accredited by the American Culinary Federation Educational Institute. Students graduating with their AAS degree automatically gain certification as Certified Culinarians (CC) by that organization.
Professional Opportunities
Internships
Gain hands-on experience in CINY’s student-run café, The Pastry Kiosk. It offers a full lunch menu with gourmet sandwiches served on freshly baked breads, plus quiches, salads and soups, and a full pastry case with decorated cupcakes, mousse-filled cakes, tarts, biscotti, and croissants.
Competitions
Each year, CINY sends a team to the ACF (American Culinary Federation) competition. We’re proud to say that we’ve taken top honors year after year. This competition and others like it give students the chance to practice their cool under pressure, network with others in the field, and perhaps take home a gold medal.
