The Department of Applied Science offers the following Bachelor Programs:

Applied Science (Foundation Entry) BSC (HONS)

This program will give you the necessary background knowledge needed for progression on to a variety of science-based degrees at UCLan.  Studying modules in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics and Skills for Science, the foundation year will give you the essential knowledge and understanding to facilitate your study at degree level.

Astrophysics BSC (HONS)

Do you ever wonder how our universe came to be? Our Astrophysics degree course provides you with essential training to help find the answer, in understanding the application of physics to the stars and galaxies which make up the universe, whilst developing your skills in scientific methods. You will also develop your mathematical skills, and benefit from a state-of-the art learning environment for practical analysis, interpretation and modelling of astronomical data. This will provide you with excellent observational, mathematical and logical skills and these problem-solving abilities will make you particularly attractive to employers, not just in astrophysics, but in a wide range of fields including oil and gas, and medical physics.

Astrophysics MPHYS

Do you ever wonder how our universe came to be? Our MPhys Astrophysics degree course provides you with essential training to help find the answer, in understanding the application of physics to the stars and galaxies which make up the universe, whilst developing your skills in scientific methods. You will also develop your mathematical skills, and benefit from a state-of-the-art learning environment for practical analysis, interpretation and modelling of astronomical data. This will provide you with excellent observational, mathematical and logical skills and these problem-solving abilities will make you particularly attractive to employers, not just in astrophysics, but in a wide range of fields including oil and gas, and medical physics.

Physics with Astrophysics BSC (HONS)

These courses combine elements of our Physics and Astrophysics degrees and are popular routes if you want to keep options open for further study. UCLan’s Physics with Astrophysics degree courses provide a comprehensive education in the subject, from quantum physics to the formation of the Universe. You will improve your mathematical skills, backed up by practical laboratory experience, and gain an in-depth knowledge of the laws of physics, and the stars and galaxies that make up the universe. You will become highly proficient at problem solving and solving challenges by thinking creatively. These, along with the practical skills gained through planning experiments, processing, analyzing, and interpreting data, are skills which are useful for any career.

Physics with Astrophysics MPHYS

These courses combine elements of our Physics and Astrophysics degrees and are popular routes if you want to keep options open for further study. UCLan’s MPhys Physics with Astrophysics degree course provide a rounded education in the subject, from quantum physics to the formation of the Universe.

Chemistry BSC (HONS)

UCLan’s Chemistry degree course is entirely unique. As well as giving you a solid, practical, laboratory-based foundation in all the traditional elements of physical, inorganic, organic and analytical chemistry, a strong emphasis is placed on the sustainable modern practices that have revolutionized chemicals manufacture and given rise to the term ‘Green Chemistry.’ Graduates from this course will be better prepared than most to understand the new environmentally-friendly systems and processes the chemical industry is adopting – making you much more employable than most, too.

Chemistry MCHEM 4 years

The MChem is now the established mainstream route to becoming a professional chemist in the UK. For the first two years of the course, you’ll follow a similar learning path to the BSc program, then during your third and fourth years the course steps up a gear. You’ll focus on more advanced, master’s level topics, with the option to specialize in either synthetic organic chemistry or materials / analytical chemistry. The end result is the kind of widely respected qualification that the major employers of chemists – and the Royal Society of Chemistry – are looking for.

Biology BSC (HONS)

If you are interested in a broad range of biology topics from microbes to humans, including the biology of disease, the natural world, evolution, genetics and how humans and organisms interact with their environment, then this is the Biology degree course for you. You will develop the breadth of understanding and hands-on practical skills that enable you to apply your expertise to the many challenges we face in the world today, such as microbial resistance, climate change, safe and sustainable food production and the conservation of endangered species.

Biomedical Science BSC (HONS) – TOP-UP

The BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science Top-up route has been designed to meet the needs of individuals who are working or who are considering working in an NHS pathology laboratory but do not possess an accredited Biomedical Science degree. In a situation such as this, prior contact with the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) and assessment of the current degree content should be undertaken to reveal if any additional study is required before the holder’s degree can be recognized. If additional study is required this may often include some or all of the specialist modules such as hematology, cellular pathology or clinical biochemistry. The top-up route allows all the required modules identified by the IBMS to be studied on a part-time basis. Once completed the original degree can be accredited by the professional body.

Biomedical Science BSC (HONS)

Accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), which is essential for employment in hospital pathology laboratories, this course involves the study of health and disease and provides an in-depth understanding of how the human body functions during normal and diseased states. You’ll develop a range of laboratory based and theoretical skills associated with sound scientific practice. As a graduate you can work in diagnostic pathology laboratories, biomedical research or the bioscience industry.
