The Department of Biological Sciences offers the following Master Programs:

Program Name

Analytical Bioscience (Postgraduate Diploma)

Our Postgraduate Diploma in Analytical Bioscience provides advanced training for work and research in the molecular biosciences, biomedical and pharmaceutical sectors. You can gain extensive hands-on experience in a laboratory setting.

Analytical Bioscience (MSC)

Our MSc Analytical Bioscience provides hands-on experience and training in a wide range of analysis techniques and instrumentation used in the molecular biosciences, biomedical and pharmaceutical sectors. It is designed to allow flexibility in attendance requirements and offers the opportunity to complete a novel research project in one of our excellent research laboratories.

Analytical Chemistry (Postgraduate Diploma)

Our Postgraduate Diploma in Analytical Chemistry delivers comprehensive training in analytical chemistry, with a specialist module in clinical analysis.

The program offers the opportunity to complete a research project in our research laboratories, with constant contact between staff and students which creates opportunities for you to comment on, and take responsibility for, the direction of your studies. Alternatively you may complete the project at your place of work if appropriate.

Bioinformatics (MSC)

Our MSc Bioinformatics provides high-quality training in bioinformatics. It is run in parallel with an MRes course that includes a larger research component.

This specialist postgraduate degree is ideal if you are from a scientific background and want to pursue research training in bioinformatics and systems biology, or if you are seeking a future career in both academia and industry. Bioinformatics and systems biology have grown dramatically in the last two decades and this program has been designed to meet the needs of the pharmaceutical, chemical and biotechnology industries for research and development.

Chemical Research (MRES)

The MRes Chemical Research is ideal if you wish to further your research career or update your training. You will join an existing research group under the guidance of a supervisor, and spend the majority of time on an individually tailored research project in any of the Department’s current research areas that include some reference to chemical and biological sciences. You will also partake in group activities, including research colloquia and presentations, and attend advanced lectures on the theoretical and technical background to your chosen research area.

Structural Biology (MRES)

The MRes in Structural Biology is an intensive, high-quality introduction to research in structural and computational biology, which are key to the dissection of macromolecular ‘machines’ and cellular pathways of medical interest.

This course offers both taught components and extensive research experience for students with backgrounds in biological, chemical and physical sciences. It is particularly suitable for those who wish to gain both theoretical and practical research experience in the techniques of structural biology.

Bio-Business (MSC)

If you are seeking a role in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industries, it’s essential that you have a solid understanding of the science and the regulatory environment, as well as communications and deal-making skills. Birkbeck’s MSc Bio-Business delivers broad, yet detailed, insights into both the theory and practice of entrepreneurship and business in the bioscience industries, with a focus on commercial activity in science-related projects.

Global Infectious Diseases (MRES)

Global infectious diseases have set off alarms with serious public health emergencies from time to time. Interdisciplinary research approaches and international co-operation are vital to tackling infectious disease outbreaks, epidemics and unprecedented global pandemics like the ongoing severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) due to a novel coronavirus, along with our old foes tuberculosis (TB), cholera, malaria, Ebola, Zika, bird flu to name a few.
