The Department of Engineering Technology offers the following Bachelor Programs:
Electrical and Electronic Engineering BENG (HONS)
Electrical and Electronic Engineering at UCLan provides a balance between the interrelated but distinctly different areas of electrical engineering and electronic engineering. You will develop skills in power electronics, motor control systems, renewable energy and compliment this with in depth knowledge of electronics such as analogue circuits and embedded systems development. The course has practical modules based around building skills needed within industry such as problem solving in an engineering context, project management and communications skills. You will be given opportunities to explore specialist areas in our dedicated laboratories that include modern test and measurement equipment as well as more specialist equipment for power electronics and robotics.
Electronic Engineering BENG (HONS)
Take your place in the expanding and dynamic world of electronics on this accredited, respected course. You’ll learn the fundamental principles of electronic engineering and the programming skills necessary for modern embedded system design – all while developing an understanding of current practice in electronic system design, including microcontrollers and FPGAs, signal analysis and conditioning, and interfacing and communications. You can tailor your study to include various specialist topics according to your interests and ambitions – and when you graduate, you’ll have the skills and confidence you need to succeed as a modern graduate electronic engineer in industry.
Electronic Engineering MENG 4 years
Expand your expertise with the technical depth and project work experience you need to progress further in an electronic engineering career on our MEng degree program. The extra year’s study leads to a deeper understanding of the subject and its real-world application. You’ll get the chance to work on a wider range of projects, including group work that could involve our professional partners and collaborators – BAE Systems, NASA, the NHS and the Northwest Aerospace Alliance, among others. And just as importantly, you’ll develop a range of transferable skills, like teamwork, decision-making, delegation, identifying and solving problems, and communication – all skills employers prize.
Energy Engineering BENG (HONS)
The future security of our energy supply is one of the most pressing issues society faces today. This course prepares future energy engineers for the challenge. It’s your chance to get real-life practical industrial experience in this rapidly-growing field, and work your way towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) status faster. With the support of our highly skilled teaching staff, you’ll gain the contemporary technical design, power generation and operations skills you need to increase energy efficiency and further develop renewable sources of energy. This course is firmly industry-led, meaning you’ll graduate with the skills and knowledge you need to engineer a sustainable future.

Manufacturing Engineering BENG (HONS)
The Manufacturing Engineering degree is based on Mechanical Engineering fundamentals combined with specialist modules in Automated Production and Advanced Manufacturing. In addition to fundamental elements such as mechanics, materials, CAD/CAE/CAM and operations management, students also develop skills in user needs, business plan development and (at MEng level) social, legal and professional ethics considerations. The BEng project presents an opportunity to integrate learning across the course, while the MEng includes a higher-level project that enables students to demonstrate application of their knowledge at a professional level, and a group project that develops and demonstrates their ability to work within a team. The latter experience that is highly valued in industry.

As a mechanical engineer, you will use your knowledge of fundamental engineering principles like mechanics, materials, thermo-fluids and computer-aided design to analyze and design objects and systems with motion. On this program you will be tutored by world-class academics with both industry and research experience. You will also have the opportunity to work on industry and research-led projects. You will graduate with a rounded education that prepares you to take ideas all the way from concept to production and launch. The degree is professionally accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Institution of Engineering Designers as meeting partial fulfilment of the educational requirements to become a Chartered Engineer.
Mechanical Engineering MENG 4 years

Mechanical Maintenance Engineering (TOP-UP) (with optional placement) BENG (HONS)

During the first year of the course you will work on our Formula Ford cars, and learn about how race-car setup affects performance. Later in the course you will work as part of a student-led group on the design and build of a Formula Student race-car. This is a key part of the curriculum, and leads up to entering your car into an international competition at Silverstone – renowned as a testing ground for the next generation of world-class engineers. This course is absolutely focused on delivering top flight racing and engineering professionals.

You’ll gain a thorough grasp of the fundamentals of safety engineering; practical experience in the use of state-of-the-art techniques for the study of safety engineering systems, together with an understanding of the necessary scientific, engineering and technological principles. Robotics Engineering BENG (HONS)

Software Engineering FDSC
Developed in close collaboration with BAE Systems, this foundation degree will prepare you for a career developing software solutions in a variety of areas such as: computer networking, security, image and signal processing, embedded real-time system development, web, applications, graphics, mobile devices and games. You’ll develop skills in the creation of software and digital systems and explore modern approaches to project management, teamwork and interaction with clients, users and managers. The practical approach enables you to apply the ideas and techniques in your work environment but provides the academic basis for you to top-up to an Honours Degree, preparing you for an exciting career in this rapidly growing industry.
Software Engineering BSC (HONS)
Develop software development skills in a practical hands-on way on this diverse course. You’ll cover a range of technologies – from mobile phones to enterprise applications – across the whole development lifecycle, from understanding requirements through to design and implementation and testing. In your first year, you’ll develop interactive games using 3D-graphics. In Year 2, you’ll work in a team to design and develop substantial, realistic applications. By Year 3, you’ll be ready to tackle complex, concurrent systems involving multiple, interacting components. Along the way, there’ll be opportunities to work on live projects for real clients – thoroughly preparing you for a rewarding career.
