The Department of Medical Sciences offers the following Bachelor Programs:

 

Neuroscience BSC (HONS)

Want to understand the cause and treatment for neurological and psychiatric disorders and diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia and major depression? Neuroscience is a truly modern and multidisciplinary subject which seeks to understand the most complex organ in the body; the nervous system. Our degree covers pharmacy and biomedical sciences as well as cognitive and physiological psychology. This is one of only a handful of courses that offers this multidisciplinary approach and you’ll learn how the brain and nervous system work to alter behavior, perception, mood and memory. You’ll be able to tailor your degree in your final year by studying the modules which appeal to you the most and which ultimately you will specialize in, giving you a well-rounded background to further your future career in the Neuroscience field.

 

 

Nutrition and Exercise Sciences BSC (HONS)

This degree is one of only five courses in the UK to be endorsed by the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr). The course has been designed to provide you with an intellectually stimulating and vocationally relevant program if you are interested in nutrition and exercise sciences as it relates to health. Sedentary lifestyles and poor nutrition can cause diseases that place an enormous burden on the individual and society as a whole. The importance of achieving and maintaining a good level of health and nutrient intake is receiving greater recognition from employers, the government and the general public.

 

Occupational Therapy BSC (HONS) – Pre-Registration

This new, innovative and dynamic occupational therapy program will provide an outstanding learning experience for those wanting to join this well-established and valued profession. Combining academic and practice placement components, UCLan offers a three year full-time BSc course to enable students to develop all the skills, knowledge and attributes required to meet the Health and Care Professions Council requirements for registration as an occupational therapist. Key features of the course include a small student cohort, the use of novel technology and authentic case studies to support learning, superb clinical skills environments and a program placed within a Faculty of Health and Wellbeing ensuring a range of opportunities for inter-disciplinary education.

 

 

Operating Department Practice BSC (HONS)

Would you enjoy working as part of a multi-professional team and caring for people at one of the most critical times during their hospital stay? This course will be of interest if you want a rewarding career as a healthcare professional in the operating department. Operating department practitioners are key members of the surgical team, who respond to the physical and psychological needs of patients, throughout their surgical experience. You’ll spend 50% of your time in clinical practice gaining hands-on experience and 50% will be spent in the classroom, including using our high specification clinical skills labs with interactive simulators creating realistic learning experiences.

 

Paramedic Science BSC (HONS)

If you like variety, work well under pressure and want to work in medical care, this could be the perfect course for you. Learn the essential skills required to work as a paramedic on this popular and well-established course. Delivered in collaboration with the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS), you’ll be involved in clinical simulation and experienced varied clinical practice in the NHS preparing you to deal with a range of situations, from minor wounds and minor conditions to more serious injuries and illness. This course will prepare you to work in challenging and constantly changing environments; to interact with service users, the public and other emergency staff and to contribute to out-of-hospital care in the future.

 

Pharmacology BSC (HONS)

The BSc Pharmacology course explores all this and more. On this degree you’ll study how disease affects the normal human body and learn in detail how drugs restore normal function. You will explore where drugs come from and how they are developed. Teaching is guided by research specialisms of the staff members, and includes neuropharmacology, nanotechnology, cancer treatments, and drugs of abuse. With over 300 hours of practical classes you will gain extensive hands-on experience discovering how molecules, cells and whole organisms function and how they are affected by drugs. This culminates in an extended final year research project, allowing you to apply your knowledge and practical skills to an in-depth study.

 

Pharmacy MPHARM 4 years

Our fully GPhC accredited MPharm (Hons) degree ensures that you will have the knowledge and skills to be a key member of the healthcare team – becoming a pharmacy expert, health advocate, communicator, collaborator, scholar and professional. You’ll study aspects of medicine development and use, from how medicines are formulated to how they work on the body to treat various diseases. We integrate science and practice throughout each of the four years of the degree, and ensure that your experiential learning increases year on year. Through structured placements in each year, you will gain an appreciation of the different sectors that pharmacists work in, and their role in these different teams. Each year you will participate in session working with the patient and the public, gaining the patient’s perspective, and ensuring that patient-centred care is at the heart of everything that we do. Every year, students will participate in inter-professional engagement sessions, working alongside medical, dentistry, nursing, physiotherapy, healthcare science, physicians’ associates, and social care students.
