About Instituto Marangoni

Istituto Marangoni is the international fashion school par excellence, with four Schools in the most prestigious venues of international fashion. In Milan, the capital of Made in Italy, in Florence, where fashion, art and tradition meet, in Paris, the home of haute couture, in London, where trends are born and in Shanghai, where fashion is the future, Istituto Marangoni is able to offer different visions of the contemporary fashion system to its students. Istituto Marangoni is a school where the passion for fashion unites cultures, ideas and people from all over the world. Entering Istituto Marangoni means being part of a very special community, where fashion is the common denominator in all its most cosmopolitan aspects. The four sites of Istituto Marangoni are truly one of the most international student contexts in the world, with more than 4,000 students from 106 countries, each with infinite interests, styles, and knowledge. Attending this school is an experience of being immersed in fashion, learning and being enriched through contact with the most varied and interesting cultural realities. The new School of Art brings together, in one prestigious site, all the disciplines taught by Istituto Marangoni. The school is located in a historical building in via de’ Tornabuoni 17, in the core of the city, just a few steps away from Piazza S.Trinità and the museums of Gucci and Ferragamo. In addition to a range of long and short courses in fashion and design, the new Firenze school provides an intense programme of studies dedicated to art and encompassing History of Art, Art ‘Management’ and Visual Multimedia Art. The Florentine school is on the one hand characterised by the support of professors who are both professionals and highly specialized technicians in the ‘art of making’, and on the other by collaboration with an important French institution in the field of art teaching, the renowned Atelier de Sèvres (for Art courses). This completes the school’s innovative and prestigious profile.

About Program

Shoe design is one of the most exciting and challenging sectors in fashion today. Meeting the needs of those with limited time available, this intensive one-year Shoe Design course provides the technical and theoretical concepts related to shoe design and production techniques, cultivating a new generation of footwear artisans set in the birthplace of Italian leather goods and the accessories industry; Firenze, Italy. Home to luxury brands such as Gucci, Ferragamo, Cavalli, and Emilio Pucci, and to generations of highly skilled artisans and craftsmen, Firenze is a hub of creativity, and has long been recognised as the main Italian city for leather and luxury accessories production – upholding the ‘Made in Italy’ brand renowned for style, quality and top-class manufacturing techniques. Over the last few years the sector has seen an evolution in the use of innovative materials and production techniques, addressing issues in sustainability, renewable resources, and new concepts of wearable designs. This fashion course provides a clear balance between fashion flare and technical concepts to produce designs that are both functional and beautiful. Participants are introduced to various design illustration techniques (2D, 3D) and look at the characteristics and performance of materials in order to evaluate appropriate design, and production proposals. Moving forward they discover some of the key technical drawing skills required for the development and prototyping for production. Via an introduction to new technologies, and experimentation with new materials for contemporary aesthetic value and performance, participants are also encouraged to develop their own personal ‘visual language’ and style. This dynamic course also looks at contemporary issues in the sector and the evolution of shoe design from its humble beginnings as a functional accessory in fashion, to the elevated status it has today as the signature piece in a fashion collection.
